Why I Do Youtube
It was not about the fame, but the fun. As a child or even as a teen I didn’t have to worry about the sustainability of a hobby, I could do whatever I wanted without having to worry if my hobby or my talents could pay the bills. Today, the story is very much the same but due to the adulting life, I’m looking for a hobby that is asking a lot out of me, and that’s Youtube.
There’s many starting points to Youtube but for me it was doing home videos and eventually working my way up to the do the morning high school news with my best friend Gordon.
It was our junior year and we decided to put our home video skills to the test and also just mess around. He thought that if those kids could do it, we sure could it too. Rather than trying to be popular, we wanted to be creative and have fun.
The school loved us. They love the spontaneity and flavor that we brought to the morning news beyond what was written down on the paper. It was easy to write on the paper, it was a skill to improvise and Gordon was good at that. I can’t say that I was as bold or creative with my improv, but I can say that I was genuine and authentic in my fun responses to whatever Gordon had.
Reflecting back on this, I am reaching for a bit of that nostalgia of having impact on others while having fun and maybe even burning with some passion. It's nonsense to be famous without making a positive impact, to be famous for something you don’t want to even be famous for.
For me, Youtube represents freedom, fun, and creative focus. It’s a place where the right audience can find you for free at only the cost of what you're willing to invest in it. Although I’m still struggling with niche and my direction, I still have no regrets in making Youtube videos.
