Why I Didn't Want to Work for A Wedding Photo/Video Company

If you look hard enough in the places you want to be, you may find the opportunity you’re looking for…or not looking for. I was doing a wedding for free for some high school friends and worked alongside with photographers who were part of photo/video company.

These photographers were pleasant and easy to work with. By the end of the night, one of them asked me to stop by and to speak with the boss and I could possibly find myself working with them. So, within the week I stopped by their office and left my contact details and never heard from them. In addition, I never followed up on them because as soon as I left the office I immediately realized that I didn’t want to work for them or even with them. I wanted my weekends, especially since I observe the Saturday Sabbath I wasn't interested in giving up any more days to shoot weddings for them. I was going to compromise on.

I didn't want to work with them because I really just wanted to work on my own stuff. I wasn't motivated with extra income, I wasn't passionate about wedding videography, nor was this company doing anything that made me really want to work with them.

I'm thankful for the opportunity to have worked alongside the photographers and I'm glad to have a glimpse of what it means to network and connect with other creative entrepreneurs, but I also realized what I can do is not always what I want to do. Just because you are skilled at your hobbies, doesn’t mean that you always need to turn your hobbies into professional work. Although the experience of working as a wedding videographer would be invaluable, I also figured that I wanted a different path for my creative direction. It’s OK that we experience the things that we don’t want to continue to experience in the future. Now I know this is a “no” for me and this is a step that brings me closer to the valuable things that make me say, “yes.”
